Stonewall Kitchen Sea Salt Espresso Martini Mixer
The salted take — a pinch of sea salt built into the mix rounds the bitterness.
View on AmazonThe espresso martini has a design flaw: it’s an after-dinner drink built on a double shot of coffee. Order one at 9pm and you’ve taken 60–130mg of caffeine into the small hours — our caffeine breakdown has the full numbers. The decaf version fixes this, and done properly it gives up almost nothing.
What makes a good decaf kit
There are almost no purpose-built “decaf espresso martini kits” sold as such — what you’re really buying is a standard kit plus the right coffee. The three components:
- Swiss Water Process decaf beans. This chemical-free method keeps the most flavor. Look for a roast date within the last month; decaf stales faster than regular beans. Our coffee guide explains what roast level works best.
- A standard coffee liqueur — or a low-caffeine one. Regular liqueur contributes only 5–10mg per serve, which most people can ignore. The fully decaf option is a decaf cold-brew liqueur, a small but growing category.
- Everything else unchanged. Vodka, syrup, shaker and technique are identical to the classic.
Three ways to build it
1. Standard kit + decaf beans (easiest)
Buy any kit from our main rankings and a 12 oz bag of Swiss Water decaf. This is the best option for households where some people want the caffeine and some don’t — one kit, two coffees.
2. The fully decaf build (lowest caffeine)
Decaf shot, decaf coffee liqueur, vodka, syrup: under 15mg total, roughly the caffeine of a hot chocolate. This is the version for genuinely caffeine-sensitive drinkers.
3. Decaf + zero-proof (the nightcap that’s neither)
Combine decaf coffee with the swaps in our non-alcoholic kit guide and you have a drink with no meaningful caffeine or alcohol that still looks and tastes like the real thing.
Getting foam from decaf shots
Decaf crema is slightly thinner because processing strips some of the oils that stabilize it. Compensate with a longer, harder shake — 20 seconds instead of 15 — or a dry shake first. The foam guide covers both techniques.
The recipe, adjusted
Follow the classic recipe exactly, swapping in a fresh double shot of decaf. Because decaf can taste marginally flatter, a single extra bar-spoon of syrup or a pinch of salt lifts it. Garnish with three beans as usual — there’s a story behind those.
Frequently asked questions
Does a decaf espresso martini taste different?
With good Swiss Water Process beans, barely. Decaffeination removes some aromatic compounds, so the shot is slightly less bright, but under coffee liqueur and syrup the difference is hard to pick. Poorly processed decaf, however, tastes flat and papery — the bean quality matters more than in a regular martini.
Is a decaf espresso martini completely caffeine-free?
No. A decaf shot still carries 3–10mg of caffeine, and standard coffee liqueur adds roughly 5–10mg more. A fully decaf build (decaf shot plus low-caffeine liqueur) lands under 15mg — versus 60–130mg for the regular drink. That's low enough not to affect most people's sleep.
Can I just ask for decaf in a regular kit?
Effectively yes — buy any kit you like and swap the coffee. The liqueur and vodka are unchanged, so the simplest 'decaf kit' is a standard kit plus a bag of good Swiss Water decaf beans.
