Kahlúa Espresso Martini Kit Review: What's in the Box?

Kahlúa is the liqueur most espresso martinis are made with, so the official kit is many people’s first espresso martini purchase. It’s a decent gift and a mediocre value buy — here’s exactly why, and how to fix its weaknesses.

What you actually get

The core of every edition is a bottle of Kahlúa (usually 750ml) plus an Absolut vodka miniature. Depending on the edition and retailer, the box adds a branded martini glass, instant espresso sachets, or a small plastic shaker. Two things to check before buying:

• Vodka size. The 50ml miniature makes two drinks. After that you’re buying vodka anyway — factor that into the price comparison.
• The coffee. Instant sachets are the weakest link in the box. Plan to use fresh espresso; our no-machine guide covers options if you don’t own a machine.

How it tastes

Kahlúa is rum-based, 20% ABV, and sweet — roughly double the sugar of newer craft liqueurs. In the standard recipe that sweetness stacks with the syrup, so the kit’s martinis run dessert-like. The fix is simple: halve the syrup. With that one change, 2 oz vodka, 1 oz Kahlúa, 1 oz fresh espresso and a bar spoon of syrup makes a properly balanced, recognizably classic drink. The kit’s value is presentation: as a gift, unboxing a branded set beats handing over two bottles. Buying for yourself, the two-bottle build from our budget guide is flatly better.

Verdict

Buy it as a gift for someone starting out — the brand is familiar, the drink is approachable, and the glass editions present well next to other gift sets. Skip it for yourself and build the same thing cheaper. And if the recipient already loves coffee, a craft infusion kit is the more impressive box at a similar price.
