Mr Black Espresso Martini Kit Review: The Coffee Lover's Pick

Every ingredient in an espresso martini can be upgraded, but only one upgrade changes the drink’s character: the coffee liqueur. Mr Black’s kit is built on that idea, and for coffee-first drinkers it’s the best branded kit you can buy.

What’s in the box

Editions vary, but the classic kit pairs a 750ml bottle of Mr Black with barware — typically a shaker and jigger, sometimes two coupe glasses in the larger sets. Notably absent: vodka and coffee. That’s deliberate; Mr Black’s own serve uses equal parts liqueur, vodka and espresso, and the brand assumes you’ll supply fresh shots. Why the liqueur matters this much

Mass-market coffee liqueurs are roughly 20% ABV and heavily sugared. Mr Black is 25% ABV, uses cold-brewed specialty arabica, and carries about half the sugar. In the finished martini that means:

• Real bitterness. The drink finishes like coffee, not like tiramisu.
• Less syrup needed. Most Mr Black recipes drop the sugar syrup entirely.

The Mr Black spec

Equal parts is the house serve: 1 oz each of Mr Black, vodka, and fresh espresso, shaken hard for 15 seconds and double-strained. No syrup. It’s drier than the classic spec — if the first sip is too bitter, add a bar spoon of syrup rather than more liqueur. A clean, neutral vodka works best under it; see our vodka picks.

Value and verdict

A Mr Black bottle costs $35–40 on its own, so a $60–80 kit is effectively charging $25–40 for the barware — fair if you need a shaker and glasses, poor if you don’t. As a gift for a coffee obsessive, it’s the best box in the category and the centerpiece of most luxury kits worth buying. For someone with a sweet tooth, stick with the Kahlúa kit.
